We cherish the cultural heritage of Pernaja, maintain the historic Agricola House and bring the community together around events and local history.
Society
The Pernaja Agricola Society was founded in 2005 to honour the memory of Agricola and to promote culture, local heritage work and historical research.
Every year, we organise a number of events — summer festivals, exhibitions and conferences — which bring together both local residents and visitors from neighbouring areas.
We carry out active, voluntary maintenance work and ensure that the Agricola House is preserved for future generations.
Museum
The Agricola House Museum tells the story of Mikael Agricola — creator of written Finnish and peacemaker — while also shedding light on the parish of Pernaja and the lives of its inhabitants over the centuries. The collections include, among other things, finds from the archaeological excavations carried out in Pernaja at the turn of the millennium.

The building
Agricola House is a former primary school in the centre of Pernaja parish, built in the early 20th century. The house takes its name from the work of the society that cherishes the memory of Mikael Agricola and the tradition of honouring Finnish culture.
The building has undergone several renovations, the most significant of which was carried out in the 2010s. The society maintains the house with volunteer work, and members take an active part in its upkeep and repairs.
In addition to housing the museum, the house serves as a meeting and event venue where the community gathers all year round. The office and archive of the Kuninkaantie (King’s Road) association are also located in Agricola House.
Born in Torsby, Pernaja
Agricola’s life in a nutshell — the father of written Finnish was born in Pernaja. His life’s work laid the foundation for Finnish literacy and the written language.
